In 1978, General Motors set out to replace their transit bus design that had seen tremendous success since 1959. Their Rapid Transit Series bus was introduced that year, and proved just as successful as its predecessor. Even after GMC left the transit coach market, Transit Motor Coach of Motor Coach Industries purchased the design and continued production. Later still, NovaBus Corporation purchased the design from TMC and produced them into the 2000s. Nova sold the design to Millennium Transit Services, LLC, which had very little success continuing the model.
The CCTA was formed in 1973 to serve Burlington, VT and surrounding communities. It was replaced in 2016 by a consolidated Green Mountain Transit Authority, incorporating systems serving other Vermont areas including Montpelier.
